Newbie Guide to Gun Safety:
Gun Safety in the Range
While you’re at the shooting range or anywhere you handle a firearm, these 4 Rules of Gun Safety must be followed 100% of the time. Knowing these rules and insisting that others do the same will help keep everyone safe.
Rule #1: Consider every gun as loaded.
Never assume that someone has handed you an unloaded firearm. Always check yourself to see if a firearm is really unloaded even if someone says it is empty or clear. Inspect the firearm yourself before moving on.
Rules like this may seem like common sense. But not everyone perceives things like not pointing a gun at themselves or their friends. That’s why we must continue to Rule #2.
Rule #2: Never let the muzzle of a gun point
at anything you are not willing to shoot.
Make sure you do not point a firearm at anything you are not willing to shoot, even if you think it is unloaded. It is your responsibility to ALWAYS keep the gun pointed in a safe direction 100% of the time.
You don't want to be a part of an improbable firearm glitch that leads to something or someone unintentionally getting shot. This is also the reason why we must also follow the easiest rule, Rule#3.
Rule #3: Keep your finger off the trigger until you
are ready to shoot.
You diminish your chances of accidentally firing a firearm if your finger is off the trigger.
Remember, your “Trigger Finger” must become your “Safety Finger.” Be sure that you only place your finger on the trigger once your sights are on target. Situational awareness is very important BEFORE you make the decision to shoot, which will lead to Rule#4.
Rule #4: Be sure of your target and what is around
it.
The last rule of gun safety is just as significant as the rest.
You must be sure to know exactly what is beyond your target. According to The Physics Factbook, a bullet fired from an average sized 9mm handgun will travel 2,300 feet before falling. This means never point or fire at anything you can’t clearly identify as a target or that would be a danger if your bullet strays, ricochets, or over penetrates.
Conclusion:
Following these rules can allow you to safely enjoy using firearms your entire life.
